Re: New Webbernets!!!
12Mbit/s, that's pretty average really. What was your old one because when someone says ' new interwebs' I expect things among the line of 40 or 50 mbit/s
Also, I've been trying to convince my parents that we should switch from our currents 20Mbit/s ADSL to 50Mbit/s Cable which is the fastest speed until the glass fiber network is accessible for non-companies. This would really make my considering how much faster I could download my movies and mods/games/gmod content. However they don't feel like it since they find it fast enough, sure it's decent for your browsing but come on, higher speed = bandwidth to abuse with downloads = higher speeds for you while I am downloading!

Re: New Webbernets!!!
20Mbit, decent?! The average is around 40Mbit over here and download caps are for strange foreign countries, I dont even have one on my mobile phone (€10 a month, no cap, max speed 7Mbit/s)!
Re: New Webbernets!!!
Average here is like 10 mbits per second. But no limits on phone isn't uncommon.

First of all, shut up adam
Second, the reason it's so high in developed Asia is because there are a lot of small companies there as opposed to the four or five big monopolies like we have here.
My brother who lived in South Korea described it as "a shitstorm" of competition to give you internet. I'm jealous.

This is more proof that Japan is godlike! Not only do they create the newest things when speaking technology, they also are the first to actually have it available, they have the most beautiful girls in the world who stay gorgeous even when they reach 40 but they also have one of the fastest average internet speeds in the whole world!
A true cyberpunk country...
Also, numbers are outdated by 2 whole years which is A LOT when we're talking technology... In fact Korea now is number one of the world followed by Hong-Kong, Japan and the rest of the list (same order as 2006). Check the Akamai Internet Status reports for more info on this. They even tell stuff about the most internet attacks made by country (spoiler: it's Russia on #1).
@Adam, that's nothing to brag about since it's your university internet and not your home connection which we all know sucks

Re: New Webbernets!!!
I thought it was so slow in the US because of the long distances and lack of development when it comes to Internet. I mean after the web 1.0 bubble burst hardly anything has changed.
Strange thing is how you guys are actually taking this BS! Normally when there is a demand for faster internet companies would do their stinking best to be the first to meet the new demands, for an additional fee that is. You know, you guys should start complaining more, I'm sure there are a lot of annalists who feel the same; faster internet is required for an healthy economy.
Ow well, good luck getting Google far enough to start their own internet provider with glass fiber thus meeting the demands of people, becoming the most powerful company in the US. Ow wait, they already are!
Also, double post because this post is unrelated with my previous one.

Re: New Webbernets!!!
Pepper, we have faster internet available here. It's just expensive.
How much do you guys pay monthly for your internet? Maybe your society considers fast downloads and whatnot more important than ours.

Re: New Webbernets!!!
Im in United States, so 12mbps is above average. I had 1.5mbps
Im Korean XP. Korean internets is also cheaper.
Where I live, I can get up to 60mbps, but I'm not spending money on it.
Also Adam... Thats not your internet, thats your universities. Go buy your own internet and do the speed test thing.

Re: New Webbernets!!!
Our internet comes with a phone plan which saves us some money in total, but internet only is around €15~€20 a month for 20Mbit/s ADSL. 50Mbit fiber/cable is around €40 but this depends on what provider you have. Some offer 3-in-1 packages which comes with phone, +100 television networks and internet which really saves you some money in the end.
Edit: please notice that €1 = $1 when you look at things like these because companies are just THAT evil *cough* Steam Store *cough* Hardware *cough.

Re: New Webbernets!!!
A Euro surely does not equal a dollar for anything but steam. I don't think your internet providers are affiliated with ours, why would they base their prices off of our currencies?
I'm not positive on the exchange rates, but that's significantly less than we pay. We'd probably pay twice as much for equivalent speeds.
The one thing is though, your television sucks. I get like 800 channels here, and it's really not that expensive (First year was free!).

Re: New Webbernets!!!
A euro does not equal a dollar, normally that is. Games, steam and retail use this, hardware often uses $1 = €1.10 and the same applies to about anything we sell in grocery stores. Where you guys pay $1.50 for a 1.5L bottle of coke we pay €1.40 for it. Companies know how much profit they can make from the much wealthier European Union and the worst part is that we actually take this crap. Ow well, the whole world is unfair.
Also, I don't care about television. The internet is the new television;
-Sports are being streamed by broadcasters for free.
-Almost every show that gets broadcasted here can be watched freely on a stream from the broadcaster itself.
-Movies can be streamed in 1080p HD for just €2.50, even for the newest movies. Also, torrent/newsgroups.
-Internet is interactive, unlike television it actually draws you in it to become a part of it; more fun.
-Music is freely available all over the internet, just look at YouTube and you're bound to end up any song you need.
Let's face it, television is dying and the internet is here to take it's place as the number one medium. No censorship, no limits on what can be done and available around the world. Don't believe me, go look at newspapers. Ow wait, you can't because they are almost gone due to news sites that bring you up to date news.

Television is dying, and I am jealous. I think it's stupid that our E-economies put so much focus on the television rather than the internet. We're slow here.

Re: New Webbernets!!!
I feel your pain, especially since we all know that the future of gaming lies at online distribution and streaming. Just look at the success of steam and the stores on PS, Xbox and Wii. Still, as long as there are countries with shitty connections/download caps this development will be stalled because they don't want to make loss
Re: New Webbernets!!!
have you heard of OnLive?
(i think it's called that anyways)

Re: New Webbernets!!!
OnLive is impractical for anyone with download caps (all of N.A) because it takes a ridiculous amount of cap space up when you play, due to the live stream thing.
