I don't think it will be an unlock, although I do think its unfair to give away an item where practically nobody has a chance to get it.

now if it had a special ability that the wrench didnt have that helped in gameplay, then that'd be different and valve would be promoting bad marketing.

I don't think there's any point in using the Wrench. Sure, when you kill somebody they turn to a awesome statue but, when the Engineer update comes out, I won't be playing Engi, I'll be too busy raping there asses with Soldier! Plenty more where that came from!
