Lag on Laptop

So, I get my internet connection from a router, and no matter how close I get my laptop to it, I lag in-game.
I'll just freeze up for like, 10 seconds, and when I come back, I'll be dead. Then when I get a cable and connect the router to my laptop, I can't move. I'll be pressing the wasd keys, and I can't move.
Can anyone help me?

Check for viruses/malware/trojans, update drivers and open ports on router for a faster connection. I game on a laptop and th eonly problem I have is my video card sucking...
