Asus ul50vt laptop- okay but not good, weird lag, pretty sure it's not internet
I have this weird lag that happens in the most inconvenient times. I'll have my reticule on another scout, and as soon as I'm about to click, I'll freeze, and he'll shoot me first. Or a pyro that's a mile away and I will freeze for about 10 seconds, and when I'm out of it, he will have caught up with me. This is annoying, and I'm pretty sure it's not my internet connection because that's when I start teleporting everywhere. My screen just freezes and I stop moving for about 5-15 seconds and it's exetremely annoying. I think it might be my processor, video card, norton anti-virus, etc. I'm pretty sure this is unfixable, but can anyone tell me what I can do to fix this?
My last desktop had a crappy 2005 video card (which was given to me by a friend, I had an even crappier integrated one before that), but it worked fine in a map like orange. The only problem with it was a weird virus that made my comp shut down every ten minutes. Anyways, it eventually shut down and never turned back on, and that's why I stopped playing on Pulp servers from December-March, because I didn't have a computer. Now I have a decent laptop but I still have problems with it.

When in doubt, reformat it out.
Well that's what I do. But I'm sure James or some other smart person could give you a much better explanation.

Try turning off Norton, get moar ram, and if your computer is cluttered, try clearing some stuff out. Reformatting is a good idea. When in doubt, upgrade

Re: Asus ul50vt laptop- okay but not good, weird lag, pretty sure it's not internet
Defragment your harddisk, defragment your gamecache. Next time when the lag happens you need to look at the LED from your harddrive to check if it's very busy or not. It might indicate fragmentation.
Like Socrates said, turn off virus scanner, you might also try to install gamebooster.
You could also check the steam support forums, there is lots of info in the FAQ there. And as Valve customer you can make a ticket so they can help you. Thats what i did/do.
Also i found this on the CEVO website:

- Spoiler:
The following suggestions should improve your overall performance with CMN:
1) Ensure you have removed all unnecessary config files from your game directory or subdirectories of your game directory. If you have config files that you want to keep (such as for movie making) we suggest you store them in a separate folder and move them into your cstrike directory when you need to use them, and back out again when you're done and before any matches.
2) Close all messenger programs. MSN Messenger, AIM, Trillian, ICQ, Yahoo! Messenger, xfire, etc. etc. etc. All these programs can take resources, especially if you're getting messaged during your match, and cause you to lose performance. Also close Outlook or Outlook Express if you use them.
3) Close any Internet security programs you have. When you close them, BEWARE... they may still have processes running in the background! Norton is particularly notorious for this. Even after closing Norton, we have found as many as five Norton-related processes still running on our systems! These processes can severly inhibit your performance, so you should go through your process list carefully and close anything related to them. Remember to re-enable the software after your match.
4) Close any anti-virus programs you have. Same as above... closing the "program" doesn't necessarily close all the *processes* so be sure to check your process list. Again, remember to re-enable after your match.
5) Close or at least tweak IRC. Every channel you idle in IRC means more memory and processing power IRC is taking up on your system. If logging is enable, this is especially true. Every time something happens in one of the channels you idle, IRC has to record that to the appropriate log file. The default settings for logging IRC channel text and conversations are set pretty high, which could actually be causing issues due to a lot of hard-drive writing going on simultaneously. We suggest closing IRC altogether, but if you need to leave it open, at least part all but the necessary channels and check your logging settings and reduce the size of "trim logs to". Also check your General settings and reduce the Window buffer significantly from the default size.
6) Close all open windows of Internet Explorer, Firefox, or whatever browser you use.
7) Ensure all other unnecessary PROCESSES are closed before playing. Many people come to us saying nothing is running but vent, steam, source and CMN, but this is rarely the actual case. In nearly all cases, there are processes running in the background that could be closed. Close anything unnecessary, such as anti-virus programs, firewalls, Internet security suites, etc. etc. IF YOU NEED HELP WITH THIS, please feel free to come into CEVO's vent and talk to Ping, Plitt, or Carmony. We can go through your process list together and tell you what you can safely close.
Run a FULL SYSTEM virus scan, a FULL SYSTEM adaware scan and a FULL SYSTEM spybot scan.
9) Compress your registry using a tool like Registry Mechanic
10) Try the Advanced Suggestion.
THIS IS AN ADVANCED SUGGESTION!!! Proceed at your own risk with this one.
In addition to running applications and running processes, Windows also has a lot of services that may be running that do not present themselves in the process list. There are two ways to view/change this:
A) Go to Start->Run and type "msconfig" and hit enter. This will open your Microsoft Configuration utility. You're mostly concerned with the Startup tab here. This shows what services automatically start when your computer starts up. Go through the list and uncheck anything that you don't need to run on startup. CEVO can help you with this! Come in our vent and talk to Ping, Plitt, or Carmony for assistance.
As long as you're in the config utility, you can also check out the Services tab. This shows all the services that Windows may start on your machine. If you want, you can go through the list here and uncheck anything you don't need running, but I find it is much easier to use the services.msc utility describe in "B" below.
B) Go to Start->Run and type "services.msc" and hit enter. This will open your Windows Services configuration utility. By default, Windows runs a slew of services that are necessary for your machine to operate properly. However, depending on your installation, there may also be a handful of services that you do NOT need in order for your system to operate properly and are instead chewing up resources that could be better used clicking on faces! The config utility shows what services are available, whether they are running or not, and whether they are set to start manually, automatically, or disabled. You may wish to go through this list and modify certain services. Note that before setting one to manual you must first stop it if it is running. AGAIN, CEVO CAN HELP YOU WITH THIS! Come in our vent and talk to Ping, Plitt, or Carmony for assistance. Some common services that you may want to set to manual are (again, do so at your own risk, and remember which ones you change!!!):
* Automatic Updates (automatically downloads Windows updates)
* Computer Browser (OK to set to manual if your computer is not part of a LAN, this will not disable Internet browsing).
* Distributed Link Tracking Client (if you're not part of a LAN, you can set this to manual)
* DNS Client (should be fine to set to manual)
* Fast User Swithing Compatibility (only needed if multiple people use your computer - disable it otherwise, I think some other Windows programs start it for you)
* IIS Admin (only needed if you're hosting websites/FTP sites from your machine, otherwise set to disable)
* Machine Debug Manager (if you don't do any debugging, you can set this to manual)
* Net Logon (you can set to manual unless you're part of a domain. If you don't know, you probably aren't)
* Remote Registry (generally a good idea to disable this unless you specifically WANT remote users to be able to edit your registry)
* Security Center (if you don't use Windows firewall and you have anti-virus, this can usually be set to manual)
* Server (if you're not hosting file or print shares then this can be set to manual)
* TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper (supports name resolution in a Win2K domain, can usually be set to manual)
* World Wide Web Publishing (set to manual unless you host websites/FTP sites on your system)
There may be others that you do not need as well. Always write down what you disable in case you need to reenable it again. And one more time.... any changes you make are at your OWN RISK!
Re: Asus ul50vt laptop- okay but not good, weird lag, pretty sure it's not internet
Ok, I'll download gamebooster, because I read some very positive reviews. As for all that other CEVO jargon, I have no idea. Where should I download it, just in case I download something completely different (or if I might download it from an unreliable site)?

Read, man! Gamebooster, you said it yourself! On cnet, it says gamebooster temporarily shuts down every other process when you turn it on, and it turns them back on when you're done.

Re: Asus ul50vt laptop- okay but not good, weird lag, pretty sure it's not internet
What does defragmenting my gamecache do? I understand that it might help with my problem, but if I try defragmenting TF2, for instance, can I still play it? I ask this because I remember I was on one of my friend's computers and none of his games worked because it said that they were defragmented. Or I am on shrooms.
BTW- thanks for the help Erasherhead, I appreciate it.

Re: Asus ul50vt laptop- okay but not good, weird lag, pretty sure it's not internet
Defragmenting is kind of like a really good reorganization of your files.
Think of your hard drive as a book shelf full of books. When you start using it, everything is in the right order, all alphabetized and clean and crisp, great for quick access. However, over time, things start to clutter up, and your favourite books are in the wrong places and it starts taking longer to access your desired reading material.
When you defrag, it essentially takes the "fragments" which are your files (think of shrapnel on a grenade when it explodes) and puts everything back in the right spot (like taking all the pieces of shrapnel and remaking the grenade out of them).
That's what I was taught, but if I'm wrong somebody can correct me.

Well your explanation of fragmentation is correct but different defraggers can handle things in different ways. Ideally a good defrag program will place your "favorite books" towards the front of the "shelf" for even easier access. Not necessarily "alphabetical order". Just take heed though as Solid State Drives become more popular, if they become mainstream you do not want to defragment an SSD.

with some defrag programs you can even tell where to move which data.
Re: Asus ul50vt laptop- okay but not good, weird lag, pretty sure it's not internet
Thanks guys! Now I lag for about half a second at a time, and it happens far less often. Now everything's a lot better
OK, I plyed and the ten second long stuttering is coming back. I think it might be Norton. Does anyone know how to temporarily disable it? I searched it on google and I'm not coming up with any asnwers.

Which antivirus would you recommend, smart guy? Anyways, I think I figured out how to disable it. I need to click "off" on a series of switches. It's kind of annoying, and I wish they just had one button that did it all.
