Amnesia: Dark Descent
Independent survival-horror game. You can't fight back. You can only survive.

I've been playing through it and I'm having a blast. It's $20 on Steam and there's a demo available too if you want to give it a shot first. The player wakes up in an old Prussian castle in the late 1800's and the only thing you can remember is your name. You slowly figure out what you have forgotten as you go deeper in the castle to murder the man who tried to protect you. But, you need to find out why.
You're being followed. Small hints at first, and then...well, you'll see. What you witness tests your sanity. This is actually an alternative health bar in the game. Straying from the light and staring too long into the grotesquery that your shadow shows you will drive you mad.
So, give it a shot. I will preempt some of our less secure forum dwellers and just say if you're a "big boy" and you're too cool to be scared don't bother. Play it when you're older. The quality of this game comes from surrendering yourself to the story and the environment.

"Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a first person horror game with a focus on immersion. It is a game where atmosphere and story comes first. We hope that the game will be a breeze of fresh air, in a genre otherwise populated by "one-man-army action hero" sagas. In Amnesia you are almost completely defenseless, something we believe not only makes the game a lot scarier, but also gives a vastly different experience."

thnx. going to play this late at night. you don't get any weapons further on in the game?
Re: Amnesia: Dark Descent
I haven't finished yet, but from what I understand there are no weapons. I think there are alternative methods, but we'll see.

Re: Amnesia: Dark Descent
a virtual haunted house!
from that trailer it seems pretty stupid (open door, close door, walk. repeat. move item. oh no! didn't open door fast enough!) but i guess it doesn't do it justice?

I've played a similar game but different environment which is called: Penumbra. It seemed fun at first, but I got tired afterward of continuing running and solving clues and hints.

Yeah, it's not for everyone, just like any other game. Fun fact though, the makers of Penumbra made Amnesia.
Watching a quick trailer on youtube doesn't really convey the message well. The demo's free if you're interested.

Bring clean underpants if your going to play this game...
Penumbra: Overture was not "very" good, Black Plague was scary and Requiem was just not really scary at all, just a few of puzzles. This one seems really scary. Thumbs up for Swedish game developers.

Personally I bring clean underpants everywhere, but I'm not going to judge your decisions.
