Post by Furgus 9/8/2010, 18:58

Well I got some money saved up and I was thinking of building a computer. The computer I'm going to build is going to be a gaming computer/high performance computer. So if you guys got any ideas on what I should build. Or any specific parts I should have on my pc just tell me. And I will take a look.

My budget is like $10,000. Cuz I work for my school and I've been saving the money up.(that's not all of it) But I want a computer that lasts long and has an off switch. Unlike my HP computer. I know I won't waste 10, 000 in one pc. But that's the money I've been saving for my pc. So let the ideas begin.

ok, well if you want a computer that will last, i would go with the following:

an intel i7, 1366 socket processor: the old setup will phase out eventually, and all new processors will most likely be built upon this new interface, so unless you want to buy a new motherboard the next time you upgrade, go with the i7. also, it should be noted that i7 processors are beasts when it comes to overclocking, so you don't need to buy the best one in order to get top of the line performance.

evga x-58 (or is it x-85?) motherboard, classified. by far the best motherboard for overclockers on the market at this point. plenty of room for RAM, raid capable, SLI/crossfire ready, ect....

corsair 16000 mhz DDR3 RAM, about 6-9 gigs should handle almost anything unless you do some serious video editing.

900+ watt power supply

one high-RPM/solid state hard drive, one high capacity hard drive. store your OS and programs on one, all your media on the other.

upper-end ATI graphics cards, make sure they have DX11 support.

Future proofing a computer is impossible.

You can make it last maybe a year longer, but you'll have to spend a LOT more to do this. Just buy parts that have the best price/performance ratio and they will do just fine.

What do you want to do? Assuming you want to game, I would recommend the following build -

CPU: i5 760 (No reason to get an i7 if you're not rendering and whatnot, just overclock your i5. With a decent water cooler, you can get it from 2.8 to 4.1ghz per core easily)

Motherboard: Asus has always treated me well. With a lot of money, you should try the P7P55D Pro or Deluxe.

Ram: If you're only doing gaming, 4 gigs. If you're doing video or rendering or whatever else, 8 gigs. If you get the i5, make sure to buy in pairs (2,4) and not triplets, (6,12). Keep in mind that if you get 4 gigs and you find you need more, you can always up it to 8 gigs assuming your mobo has sufficient RAM slots.

Video Card: Since you've got money, I'd recommend the GTX 460, or if you want a little more, a Sapphire 5850. The 5850 is marginally better than the 460 but performs worse on a couple of games. If you want to overkill, a 5870 is a good choice. If you want to destroy, a GTX 480 is the most ridiculous card within your reach probably.

Case: Whatever makes you happy with good airflow.

You've got money so get an SSD (maybe like 250 gigs) and save your OS and games there.

$10000... How about you save it for something important like a car :p
Also gaming computers are overrated, most €600 prebuilds can handle games very well these days.

10 grand?! Cripes, boy, you could buy my house for that much.

I see two ways to do it. You can upgrade individual parts semi-frequently to keep it up to par, or you can overhaul the whole computer every few years (five year tops, unless you get some seriously epic stuff and overclock it once its outdated). In the first case, you'd wanna buy old-ish parts now, and in a few months upgrade whatever is slowing your rig down. I've only been into gaming long enough to do overhauls, but upgrading it as tech improves is probably smarter.

Successful you will not be since you guys don't understand. Troll, or genuine advice? Is it not stupid that you go out and pay for these "computers" (OMG CUSTOMIZATION!!11) and then in a week you can't even use them due to viruses? Successful is what you want to be, so take my advice and just invest in a computer that you can actually USE.

inb4 "You only get viruses if you're stupid" yeah well there are backdoors to everything so ill be laughing my ass off once you're crying about some $1500 paperweight and ill just say "shoulda taken my advice bub"

it's hard to tell if you're trolling or not. i've seen people genuinely say what you are, and i have also seen people do this for the sport of it. so tell us now, are you being serious or trolling.

if you aren't trolling i'm afraid i'm going to have to rip you a new one.

Still gonna react to your second troll post, Mac has so little virusses because hardly anyone uses it! Those who create virusses, malware etc want to reach as much people as possible and since most people use Windows they target Windows.

Also my phone went FU on me again... stupid Windows Mobile -.-
