If you have trouble playing stock maps
Hey everyone, as you may know, I am playing TF2 on a laptop.
Laptops are generally not made for gaming and mine is no exception.
I couldnt play stock maps but I recently changed my configs and now
my framerate on stock maps is the same as orange maps. This is
awesome!
Right click on TF2 in steam and go to properties then launch options and type this : -dxlevel 81
After the first launch, you just have to go back to the launch options, you will not need it anymore.
After that put everything on "LOW" and put your the aliasing thing to "Billinear" (in the advanced video options)
It helped me a lot. Hope it helps you!

Re: If you have trouble playing stock maps
Thanks for the info (even though my laptop can handle stock maps). I'm sure there are more people here with older PC's/Laptops so I hope this works well for all of you. Anyway, when I play on an almost full server I start to get some FPS lag. Because of this I always put the settings one lower then is recommend (also do this in HL2). Works well for me and I'm not a graphics whore (I still play on the PS1) so it doesn't bother me
Re: If you have trouble playing stock maps
So what does this do?

Would this work for L4D2?

Re: If you have trouble playing stock maps
I have no idea since I still haven't bought L4D2 since it is €50 which €20 more then I am willing to pay for it. But if it has the same engine I guess it would work. Just dont expect anything decent on a low end PCFirestar wrote:Would this work for L4D2?
Re: If you have trouble playing stock maps
Okay, I won't expect anything decent on a low-end pc, as soon as I get one.
FYI my pc plays TF2 perfectly. It lags on L4D2 in some places, which can be annoying, so I was just wondering about this before I screwed up the game by putting it in.

I don't know if it would work, but why not give it a try.

Just did, and so far it seems to be performing better! I'll have to try some really laggy parts first tho...

Do I smell a bit of rage here? Anyway, not trying to say that your computer is crap. It's just since you asked and everything I assumed it. But now I think of it, a lot of PC's get FPS lag in L4D2.Firestar wrote:Okay, I won't expect anything decent on a low-end pc, as soon as I get one.

This is why I like consoles better, you wont have to be afraid of a game not performing right. Then again, PC is cheaper to upgrade. I guess they both have their good and bad things...

Haha, no, I just felt like a slight rage right there..
And yeah, I really want a console, but my bitch of a mom won't even let me get one...

Re: If you have trouble playing stock maps
I have a Dell Inspiron dual core so i was expecting to be able to play TF2 on it but i can't get over the FPS lag. I get an FPS of about 40-50. But when graphics go really fast (like with scout or a lot of players) it drops down in the red on many times. Btw i think an FPS of about 40-50 is even not very well playable, on my normal PC i get a rate of 100+ and it's not even a high end pc. Just a cheap 512MB AGP video card. I think i tried everything before, dxlevel, lower all settings. I even made a ticket at steam which i will copy/paste here. Furthermore i recommend Gamebooster. This nifty program turns off all windows background processes so there is more RAM/CPU available for the game.
Here my entire dialogue with steam support, i think it will have interesting information on it for laptop users.

1 « I have recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. When i play TF2 it gives me a very bad FPS rate, even when i put the display settings to minimum. I can't believe this since this machine is a dual core and has 4GB memory. Only the display card is not for gaming. What can i do to get a reasonable fps of like 60-80. Right now it drops below 20 when i start making fast movements. I also have a problem with the resolution. My laptop has a widescreen resolution of 1366x768. But i can't set TF2 on a widescreen aspect ratio, it won't accept it. When i set it to 800x600 or 1024x768 the picture is stretched instead of displaying black vertical bars on the sides, how can i fix this? Could this also increase the fps? When i startup the game it tells me that the videocard does not appear in the steam database:

Hello Dennis,
Poor FPS may occur when you run a game with video settings which exceed your system's capabilities.
Please reset your video settings to the defaults recommended for your system:
1) Open Steam to the Games/My Games menu
2) Right click the game you are having trouble with, select the Properties option
3) Select Launch Options and enter the following line:
-autoconfig
4) Run the game
The autoconfig option is intended to be used with games that use the Source and Goldsrc game engines. These are primarily games developed by Valve, but some third party games also use these engines.
If this does not correct the problem please let me know.

Hi i tried the default settings but i still have poor FPS. This notebook has a widescreen. Is it possible to improve the FPS by setting the lowest display resolution where i get vertical bars on the left and right side? Right now when i select 640x480 it is streched across the screen.
I also tried dxlevel 80 but that didn't help. What else can i try?
PS: I also have delayed sound. When i fire a shot i first see the shot and then hear it.

Hi,
A while ago i went to the Dell website (since i hava a Dell notebook) and i did an automatic driver update and it told me all my drivers were up to date. When running dxdiag i noticed i have an intel display chipset so i went to the intel driver update website: http://www.intel.com/support/detect.htm
This is the result i got. Should i try to install the intel driver instead of the Dell display driver?

A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer.

We have a hired dedicated TF2 server at gameservers.com
Since the WAR update we have experienced users losing their new weapons whil in midgame. If they disconnect/reconnect they have their weapons again? Is this something we can fix ourselves via server config or is this a known bug?

Hello Dennis,
When running a system with an integrated graphics controller, you should run the game in DirectX 7 mode*, with shader detail set to low, in windowed mode in order for the game to function properly. For more information please see the following FAQ:
Title: Reset Video Settings and Force a Video Mode
URL: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1216-JMTZ-0860
Additionally, please see this guide:
Title: Intel Video Cards with Day of Defeat: Source, Portal, Team Fortress 2, and HL2: Episode 2
Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6956-UGCB-7160
*Note: The Orange Box games do not support anything below DirectX 8.1. Left 4 Dead does not support anything below DirectX 9.0. If you can not run the game in these minimum modes, your video card does not meet the minimum system requirements to run the game.

How can i run the game in Directx 7 mode? My game is from the orange box so this means i cannot run it in this mode?
Also my screen is 16:9. Which aspect ratio should i use in windowed mode, 16:9 or 4:3?
11 « Message by you on Thu, 31st Dec 2009 9:24 am »
I have now run the game in windowed mode with 800x600 resolution and low shader details. It seems to be an improvement. Only sometimes the fps still goes in the red.
Also my sound is still delayed so when i shoot i first see the shot and then hear it, how can i improve that?

We have hired server at gameservers. We keep getting problems since the WAR update with loadout and skins not working. So the weapon unlocks don't work and skins don't work. Gameservers support don't have a clue why this is happening. I made a ticket earlier about this but it is not in my list of questions anymore?

I don't know why response 14 was appended to this ticket but it's another problem entirely.

Hello Dennis,
I have reviewed your ticket history and due to an error in ticket processing your two individual tickets were merged together.
As a result, I will be providing you with information on both of these requests.
Your first ticket, concerning performance running Team Fortress 2 on a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop with a Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset, cannot be resolved by Steam Support. As you indicated in your first message, this is not a "gaming" video adapter and is not supported for running this game. While games like TF2 may run on the laptop, there performance is not guaranteed and Steam Support cannot provide further information concerning this issue. Please note that system requirements are listed on the Store page of every game.
Your second ticket, concerning issues with a dedicated server following the WAR update cannot be resolved by Steam Support.
We do not offer support for server issues. You may, however, be able to find helpful information in the Dedicated Server forums:
Dedicated Server Discussions
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=509
Additionally, you may sign up for the Valve mailing lists for future announcements regarding server updates:

If you have any further questions, please let us know - we will be happy to assist you.

Re: If you have trouble playing stock maps
I installed gamebooster and guess what, the only programs it wants to close are Steam and Firefox Preloader. Not very usefull if you ask me...
Re: If you have trouble playing stock maps
It also closed a lot of background processes, what you are talking about are just regular programs. Besides you can select which programs to close and not to close.
