Server names

So if people browse servers to play on what should they see? We discussed it in this thread:

Remember: The most important thing about choosing a name is that it should attract players and second give information.

Let me show the names here again because they got breaks in them above:

The 100 tick will attract far more players than any of the other suggestions.

Stupid question time, what does the 100 tick stand for?

60 tick servers sends 60 fps
100 tick servers sends 100 fps

100 tick cost more, makes you look like a G-money high roller.

Tick is not the same as fps.
If you do net_graph 4 on our public server you will see a server fps of about 250 with a full server.

100 tic, really? I would've guessed 60.

What's the deal with the <<<<'s then anyway? Keep it simple, the people you want to join the server sort by latency anyway.

That, plus map name and player count. At least that's how I find servers, anyway.
I was never sure why it ever had the "greater/less than"s, because it just made the server name ridiculously long without saying anything useful. When I'm looking for a good server on the internet, the name is the last thing that influences my decision. Keep it simple.

this might attract the technology illiterate, but those that know the source engine know that is only operates at 66 tick, no matter what the hardware is.(so yes, you're getting ripped off paying for that) the name leaves other maps open for possibility, which is good.

the average person looking to pub around wouldn't care much about stats if it's just the server "flavor of the day". it shows the owners know a thing or two about running a server, but that's it.

< and > are lower on the unicode chart and therefore show up sooner in an alphabetical sort. people will see it sooner. that's why you see many servers with a huge amount of spaces before the name, they are trying to whore in players by being at the top of the list.

Who cares about being at the top of alphabetical, it's an eyesore and everyone filters searches these days anyway.

So wonderful to see a dead topic coming back alive. The poll is still open so if more people vote we can change the name of the server again.

Initially when i setup the server i used the <<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>> symbols just to make the server stand out more. How do you know what everyone does? Did you do a survey under thousands of players? I guess not. It was one of the things i had to learn as a business owner that you cannot assume what people do, you need to research it. Do some market research.

Now that may be a bit to serious but my idea was that with those symbols if someone has 20 servers in their favorites list the PULP server really stands out. What server shall we play today? Oh right my eye falls on that one lets connect!

True, i sort on ping too in the general servers list, but thats because of my bad connection. I'm sure others sort on alphabet (i didn't even think of that) and i have sorted om map myself in the past (thats why i thought adding orange in the name was senseless because you can see that in the serverlist already!).

Your Team Fortress 2 server is set to a tickrate of 66.

The main difference between a tickrate of 66 and 100 is the amount of bandwidth consumed and data sent out, it also tends to consume alot more CPU power.

Due to that, the 100 tickrate equivalent tends to cost extra, though there doesn't appear to be such an equivalent available for TF2.

Why did you start a topic discussion and poll about the server name if everything's been decided already, dismissed with a blurb about marketing?

Your "marketing strategy" of being at the top of alphabetical by uber-indenting your server name attracts children who don't know how to sort and the impatient. I would never have joined this server without my roommate Green playing here first, your server name just screams NO PREREQUISITES DO WHAT YOU WANT HERE. You're attracting the wrong crowd--how many new recruits lately have had to ask you to reconsider your age limit? Psh.

I started the topic because some people repeatedly were talking it should be changed, nothing has been decided beforehand, if you look at the dates in this topic you will see the servername was changed after more then 20 people took part in the poll, most of them voted for the tick name (17 votes). Before this topic was started there was another topic where these names that i had put in the poll were suggested.

If you want we can re-do the poll completely and also add non-indented options.

My marketing point still stands, it may have attracted maybe a crowd that is too young but we certainly did not fail. You friend thought it was worth it to check out the server, why did he decide to do that? Ask him. You can only say for a fact that this server name attracts the wrong crowd if you have setup similar orange_x3 servers in the past with different server names to backup your theory. I am not saying you are wrong, you may very well be right.

I see your point, but when i reason i can still say the indented name stands out from the thousands of other names and maybe it did attract too many noobs, at least the server is not filled with 5 people all the time. I think the server name does not matter all that much anymore right now since we have a steady crowd. So let's re-do this poll again with non-indented names.

Please everyone post more suggestions here before we start another and final poll.

I like the idea of having {PULP} Fortress - 24/7 Orange - RTD - Stats - etc etc. Our clan tag is {PULP} making it easier for people to asociate it with our server. It also tells people what mods we have installed so they know what they can expect before joining.

Now if you excuse me, my laptop is heating up pretty bad and my balls are boiling...

You could maybe put voteRTD in the servername?
